Histiocytosis is a rare blood disease that is caused by an excess of white blood cells called histiocytes. For unknown reasons, the histiocytes cluster together and attack different organs of the human body. The disease can range from limited involvement that spontaneously regresses, to progressive multi-organ involvement that can be chronic and life-threatening.
Why Do We Support This Cause?
Histiocytosis mainly attacks children under 10 years old. It is considered an orphan disease because it only affects one child in every 200,000 – too few to generate government funded research.
